Travelling in Croatia
Croatia’s Adriatic coast runs for more than a thousand islands, and its two best-known cities sit right on the water. Dubrovnik is ringed by medieval walls you can walk in full, with views over terracotta roofs to the sea. Split grew up inside the palace that the Roman emperor Diocletian built around 305 AD, so its cafés, shops and homes still occupy ancient courtyards and corridors. Inland, Zagreb is a relaxed Central European capital, with an upper town of churches and lanes and a lower town of parks and coffee houses.
Our Croatia programme includes city breaks in Dubrovnik, Split and Zagreb and a private walking tour of Dubrovnik. Croatia also appears in several multi-country journeys: the East Europe and Eastern Wonders private van tours, the Central Europe tour with Slovenia and Italy, the Balkans Explorer and our Eastern Europe self-drive route from Vienna. The coast pairs well with Slovenia’s lakes or Montenegro’s Bay of Kotor.
Food and drink
On the coast the cooking is Mediterranean: grilled fish, black risotto coloured with cuttlefish ink, octopus salad and peka, meat or octopus slow-cooked under an iron bell in embers. Inland the food is heartier, with štrukli, a baked cheese pastry, in Zagreb. Croatian wines are improving fast, notably Plavac Mali reds from the Dalmatian coast and Malvazija whites from Istria.
How to travel
A city break works well in Dubrovnik or Split, with boat trips to nearby islands. For a longer journey, a private van tour or self-drive itinerary along the coast lets you combine Croatia with its neighbours. If you would rather see Croatia from the water, we also arrange yacht and gulet charters along the Dalmatian coast.
